JESUS, THE RADICAL RABBI FROM NAZARETH
So Jesus wasn’t white, blond, and blue-eyed then!. But surely he looked like Robert Powell’s depiction of him in the film “Jesus of Nazareth”? After all, Jesus was a European Christian wasn't he, not Jewish?
JESUS WAS JEWISH
"As a child I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene."
Albert Einstein, Nobel prize winner in physics; former professor, Princeton University
"Jesus is a genuine Jewish personality, all his struggles and works, his bearing and feeling, his speech and silence, bear the stamp of a Jewish style, the mark of Jewish idealism, of the best that was and is in Judaism. He was a Jew among Jews ...."
Chief Rabbi Leo Baeck, for many years the religious leader of German Jewry.
THIS LENT AT HOLY TRINITY WINCHESTER
WE WILL BE DISCOVERING
THE JEWISH JESUS:
...the Jesus who read, learnt and practised what we call Old Testament scripture;
...the Jesus who went to synagogue;
...the Jesus who, as a child, went to Jerusalem with his family every year for Passover; the Jesus who was to be found in and around the Temple at the age of twelve, sharing his understanding of the Torah
with those who had given a lifetime to the study of it;
...the Jesus who was to be found in the Temple at Sukkot ("Booths")
...the Jesus who went to the Temple at the time of "Dedication", Hanukkah.
We don't hear of Jesus celebrating the New Year (Rosh Hashanah) or Yom Kippur,
(The Day of Atonement), but the beginning and the climax of Jesus's ministry resonates with these feasts. The next post will explore this.
